Some feel strongly that drawing and painting is a skill that can be learned by anyone willing to put in the hours to learn. Some are slighted when people admire their work and comment that they are so talented, giving no consideration to the commitment and hours the artist has invested in their craft. Others feel strongly that art, music, and athleticism is a unique talent gifted to specific individuals at birth and recognizing that talent is a complement. I’m not certain it is one or the other but what I am sure about is that art is a gift.
I am humbled when someone commissions me to do a portrait. I believe it is a gift. They entrust me and my skill and ability to deliver a worthy piece of art. It is an amazing feeling for the artist when the patron receives the piece and are overcome with joy and appreciation.
I feel fortunate when I can to carve out time to work at my easel or my drafting table, it is meditative and relaxing, a gift for my mental and spiritual health.
I am comforted in knowing my art will live beyond my years, a gift for my children and hopefully their children.
I feel privileged to gaze upon the works of the master when visiting museums, making a museum visits a priority when I travel. These masters gave an amazing gift to society. An interpretation of the time that can be enjoyed for centuries after and for centuries to come.
I’m warmed when I can share a learned technique or encourage a budding young artist, not only is it the gift of learning but also a human connection to each other through a common interest.
At this point I can’t imagine life without art, it is as necessary as food or water, and it deserves the reverence of any precious gift.
Leo is a gift.
Leo was the loved and cherished dog of Trish’s son and daughter-in-law. He was the pride and joy for this couple and truly was their fur-baby. Unfortunately, we lost Leo when he was only two years old. Trish wanted her son and daughter-in-law to have a one of kind memorial piece, and I’m humbled that she entrusted me with this honour. The couple was overjoyed with the generous gift from Trish.
